How Therapy Can Change your Brain

Can we really change our brain by talking? Thoughts, like anything else can become habit when repeated enough times. In the same way we can develop negative thought habits, we can also create positive thought habits.

This brief video from Big Think by Nicole Vignola, a neuroscientist and organizational psychologist, highlights how are brain was shaped by early experiences as well as how we can change it.

Cognitive therapy helps us discover the "programming" that has occurred in our early life. This programming is referred to as our Core Beliefs and Intermediate Beliefs. These beliefs influence how we process everyday events and experiences. The habitual use of these structures strengthens the connections in our brain and become more habitual.

When you start to examine and change the way you process events, you start to re-wire your brain. It takes more effort and intention at first, but the more you do it, the faster your brain changes and the easier or more natural it becomes.
